Michael Loughnan


Many appearances with the RSC over several years at Stratford-Upon-Avon (Royal Shakespeare Theatre and the Swan Theatre), London (Barbican Theatre and The Pit) and touring to Rotterdam, Dublin, Tokyo, and New Haven, Connecticut. Plays include TWELFTH NIGHT, MEASURE FOR MASURE, ROMEO AND JULIET, DR FAUSTUS, CYMBELINE, THE TAMING OF THE SHREW (x2), THE CHURCHILL PLAY, TROILUS AND CRESSIDA and A MONTH IN THE COUNTRY. Repertory work includes seasons in Swansea, Stockholm, Exeter, Leicester, Salisbury, Manchester Library, Derby and Chichester Festival Theatre. He joined the cast of Peter Hall's production of LYSISTRATA when it was invited to the Ancient Theatre at Epidaurus for the Athens Festival.

His first professional work was with Roland Jaquarello's touring company Green Fields And Far Away. Other touring includes POW! with Paines Plough and an open air production of THE MERRY WIVES OF WINDSOR for the Dean Taylor company in Lancashire

 In London, in addition to the Barbican and the Pit, he has appeared at The Sugawn, The Gate, The Landor, The White Bear, The Old Red Lion, The Tristan Bates (as Blake in Valerie Doulton's production of BLAKE by Elliott Hayes), The Union Theatre and The Young Vic.

TV work includes MY BROTHER JONATHAN (BBC), THE BILL, William Blake in THE SOUTH BANK SHOW (scenes from BLAKE) and THIS IS DOM JOLY.

Film includes TEA AND BULLETS (dir. Simon Hunter), THE BARN (dir. Ruaridh Webster), which won the Raindance award at the 2004 British Independent Film Awards, and Barney McGuigan in the Jimmy McGovern film SUNDAY (dir. Charles McDougall) for Channel 4.

From 2006 to 2009 he mainly worked in Ireland with the Meridian Theatre Company, and also gave several performances of A GRAIN OF SAND IN LAMBETH , including a successful week at the Everyman Theatre Studio in Cheltenham.  

Recent work in London includes the world premiere of Phyllis McMahon's play DIVORCING GOD? at the Drayton Theatre and Rattigan's WHILE THE SUN SHINES at Pentameters Theatre.
